Typing Race
Type the passage fast and clean
Typing Race puts a short passage of original prose on screen with a sixty second clock beside it, then gets out of your way. Characters you strike correctly brighten as you go, mistakes turn red on the spot, and a thin progress bar under the scoreboard shows how much of the passage is already behind you. There is no opponent to chase down a track and no lobby to wait in. The race is against your own previous run, and it begins the moment you press the first key.
Scoring follows the convention used by typing tests everywhere: five characters count as one word, so your words per minute figure is comparable with any other test you have taken. Accuracy is reported separately as the share of characters you hit correctly, so a fast but sloppy run stops flattering you fairly quickly. The clock starts on your first keystroke rather than when the page loads, which means you can read the opening sentence, settle your hands, and begin when you are ready. Clear the entire passage before time expires and the result screen says so.
Everything runs in the browser with no download and no account. On a desktop, start typing on your physical keyboard. On a phone or tablet, tap the passage to raise the on screen keyboard and type into the field at the bottom; the rules are identical. Six passages rotate, and the same one is never offered twice in a row, so a quick second attempt always brings fresh text. Your best score is kept locally on your own device, and New passage swaps in a different extract whenever you want one.
Because each passage is short, a full attempt takes under a minute, which makes this an easy warm up before a work session or a quick way to take an honest measurement of your speed. Nothing you type leaves your browser. There is no server, no profile and no upload, and the entire game is one self contained page.
How to play
- Read the opening line, then type the passage into the field at the bottom of the game.
- The clock starts on your first keystroke and gives you sixty seconds.
- Correct characters brighten, mistakes turn red and count against your accuracy.
- Clear the whole passage before the clock hits zero to see a completion result.
- Your best words per minute score is saved on this device and shown on the start screen.
Controls
- Desktop: type directly on your physical keyboard once the passage is on screen
- Mobile: tap the passage or press Start to raise the on screen keyboard, then type in the field
- Backspace corrects a mistake before you move on
- Enter starts a fresh passage from the start or result screen
Tips
- Accuracy is worth more than raw speed at first. A clean forty words per minute beats a frantic sixty full of backspaces.
- Keep your eyes on the passage rather than your hands; the red highlighting tells you about a mistake early enough to fix it.
- Type in word sized chunks instead of letter by letter. Your hands learn common endings such as -ing and -tion as single motions.
- Since five characters equal one word, punctuation and spaces are part of your score, so do not skip them.
Frequently asked questions
Is Typing Race free to play?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no cost, no account and nothing to download.
How is words per minute calculated?
Your WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by five, then divided by the minutes elapsed. That is the same formula most typing tests use, so your score is comparable across sites.
Can I play on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap the passage to bring up the on screen keyboard and type into the field below it. The passage, timing and scoring work exactly as they do on a desktop.
Does the game store what I type?
No. There is no server involved. The only thing saved is your best WPM score, kept in your own browser storage on this device.
