Sliding Puzzle

Slide the tiles to restore the order

Sliding Puzzle is a 4x4 grid of fifteen numbered tiles and one empty slot. Your job is to slide the tiles around the gap until they read 1 through 15 in order, with the blank parked in the bottom-right corner. Every board is scrambled from the finished layout, so a complete solution always exists before you make a single move.

What makes this version distinct is how each puzzle is born. Instead of pulling a fixed board from a list, the game runs a chain of legal blank moves starting from the solved state, right inside your browser. No two sessions are alike, and because it only ever shuffles reversibly, the result is mathematically guaranteed solvable. We never hand you an impossible arrangement. Stuck on one? Hit Shuffle for a fresh scramble anytime.

Interaction is built for both quick taps and careful planning. Any tile sharing a row or column with the gap slides as a whole, so a single touch can shift several pieces at once. A move counter and a live timer sit across the top, and the board resizes cleanly from a phone screen to a wide desktop. No hints are forced on you, and no move is ever locked away behind a paywall.

The whole experience is a single self-contained HTML file. There are no downloads, no accounts, and no tracking of any kind. Everything runs locally in your tab the moment the page opens, so it plays instantly whether you are on a laptop at a desk or killing a few minutes on a phone.

How to play

  1. Tap any tile in the same row or column as the empty space to slide it toward the gap.
  2. Keep sliding until the numbers read 1 to 15 left-to-right, top-to-bottom, with the blank in the bottom-right.
  3. Press Shuffle to request a new scramble at any time.

Controls

  • Mouse / touch: tap a tile aligned with the gap
  • Keyboard: arrow keys move the empty space (up / down / left / right)
  • Space or Enter: start or replay

Tips

  • Solve from the top row down; locking 1 and 2 early makes the rest fall into place.
  • Use multi-tile slides: tapping farther from the gap shifts the whole line at once.
  • If you hit a dead end, press Shuffle rather than forcing a long detour.

Frequently asked questions

Are all puzzles solvable?

Yes. Boards are created by scrambling the solved layout with legal moves, so a solution always exists.

Can I play on my phone?

Absolutely. The grid is touch-friendly and resizes to fit any screen.

Is there a time limit?

No. The timer only records how long you take, so play at your own pace.
